William Franckey presents the history and development of Galesburg's CB&Q roundhouse and related facilities. His narrative takes you on a personal journey of his career with the CB&Q. Along the way, he makes stops to describe not only the history, but also the human stories of life along "lines east". His work is not just factual, but also humorous and therefore enveloping. After reading it, I came away with a real sense of the pride and strong work ethic of the people who were the real heart of the railroad. When you stand, as I did for the previous picture, on the Fourth Street bridge and look out over its grassy expanse, I think you will never "see" it quite the same way again after reading this book.
Unfortunately, this book is now out of print. I suggest searching the Galesburg Railroad museum for any remaining copies. Also, try regional libraries.
